This is a general news update from the Oklahoma Racquetball Association, as well as a big thank you to all of the great people who came out for the 2015 State Singles event at the Northside YMCA in OKC.
As many of you are aware, the ORA has undergone a significant leadership change. We are working hard to grow and improve racquetball tournaments in Oklahoma, and grow participation in all aspects of the sport. The 2015 State Singles event was the first event run entirely by the new leadership. While we certainly have areas we can improve on, we believe the event was a great success and a good launching pad for our future events.
We welcome any and all suggestions and ideas from fellow players in regard to ways we can improve future events, ideas you may have for events, and ways we can improve the running of tournaments in general. In addition, if anyone is interested in helping out with future tournaments, please feel free to contact anyone on the ORA board (our names and email addresses can be found under the "Board Members" link at the left of this page.) While we are not looking to add a dozen new names, we are planning on expanding the ORA board in the near future and wanted to gauge interest from all players before we voted on new members. We have a few names in mind, but wanted to reach out to everyone before we made any decisions.
As for the State Singles event, we want to thank everyone who helped out, board members and non-members. We had tremendous support from sponsors, who helped keep the cost of the event manageable and provided assistance with food, funding, and equipment. We thank all the sponsors for their contributions, without them this event would not have been possible.
We also want to thank all of the players who came out and played, many in multiple events. We had some great matches and several extremely competitive divisions that came down to the wire. We had more players sign up than in the past several state events, and we learned our lesson for reserving courts for Saturday only! Match times might have been held late for some players, but we assure everyone, this is a fantastic problem to have. It was only a problem due to higher than expected attendance!
We want to continue to grow future events and find more ways to get players connected. This was a singles only event, but we will have many opportunities for doubles in future events as well. We also want to get more women involved in future events, and are hoping to run a women's event in the near future, and try to bring in as many female players as possible, including from surrounding states.
Finally, we'd like to thank Brandon Davis, the tournament director for this event. While everyone on the board (and others as well) put in time and effort to make this event possible, Brandon definitely went above and beyond to make this event a success and his efforts are much appreciated.
